W międzyczasie, za posiadanie marihuany, Wainwright trafił do więzienia w Oklahomie. Po wyjściu zza krat podpisał umowę z wytwórnią muzyczną Atlantic Records.
Do 2020 roku Wainwright wydał 26 albumów studyjnych.
