Popeye'l marín ye un famosu personaxe de cómic y de dibuxos animaos. Foi creáu por Elzie Crisler Segar y apaeció por primer vez na tira diaria Timble Theatre, na edición del The New York Evening Journal del 17 de xineru de 1929.
Popeye (n'inglés, Popeye the Sailor), ye un marineru independiente con una peculizar forma de falar, con músculos nos sos antebrazos super-desarrollaos con un ancla tatuáu
en cada unu, el mentón prominente y siempre con una pipa de maíz na boca. El so raru humor y el temperamentu coléricu da llugar en una riestra d'aventures a lo llargo del mundu, aunque tien tamién un corazón puru y un espíritu caballerescu y sensible. La carauterística más conocida d'esti personaxe ye'l consumu d'espinaques, que toma cuando s'atopa con dificultaes, y que lu convertíen nun ser poderosu capaz de castigar a los sos enemigos, por más fuertes qu'éstos fueren. Aunque nel so aniciu ye un marineru con traxe blancu, nos más de 600 episodios animaos, adopta otros papeles.
El nome de Popeye vien del so güeyu «españáu» (pop eye).
La primera aparición de Popeye tien llugar el 27 de xineru de 1929, como un personaxe menor na tira que Segar tenía nel Thimble Theatre, que venía asoleyando dende 1919, teniendo como protagonista a Olive Oyl (conocida nos dibuxos animaos emitidos n'España como Olivia o Rosario), el so hermanu Castor Oyl y el so noviu, Ham Gravy. En 1929, Castor Oyl, propietariu d'un vieyu barcu, decide facer un viaxe y ponse a buscar tripulantes y ye asina como s'atopa con Popeye. Esti personaxe entamó a ser tan popular que se-y foi dando un protagonismu mayor, pasu ente pasu. Olivia dexa a Ham Gravy pa convertise en novia de Popeye, aunque frecuentemente muestra una actitú cambiante hacia'l marineru. Elzie Crisler Segar foi introduciendo nuevos personaxes, algamando la serie y el marineru una sonadía importante de tal manera que nel añu 1932 la tira pasó a llamase Thimble Theatre Starring Popeye.
Espinaques
Al principiu de la serie la fuercia de Popeye vien dada por una pita máxica, pero bien ceo foi sustituida poles espinaques. La referencia a les espinaques vien d'un estudiu publicáu que mencionaba un altu conteníu en fierro, esta referencia fizo que'l consumu d'esti vexetal espoxigara dafechu. Cuéntase que la comunidá de cultivu d'espinaques existente en Crystal City (Texas) llevantó una estatua n'honor de Popeye.
Nel cartoon del añu 1954 tituláu "Greek Mirthology" (Mitoloxía Griega) Popeye explica l'aniciu ficticiu de la espinaca, explicando como un antepasáu romanu de Popeye yera casi un Hércules y esti consumu apurría-y grandes poderes.
Otros Popeyes En 1934 los estudios Max Fleischer crearon una versión en dibuxos animaos que fizo medrar considerablemente la fama de los personaxes. Tamién Popeye foi'l mocín d'un folletín televisivu nos años sesenta, asina como d'una película dirixida por Robert Altman, faciendo'l papel de Popeye Robin Williams .
Otros autores Tres la muerte del so creador, Elzie Crisler Segar, en 1938, la serie foi continuada nel guión por Tom Sims, y como dibuxantes por Doc Winner y Joe Musial. A partir del añu 1958 continuóla Bud Sagendorf, tamién autor de versiones pa los comic book.
