Historija Prva nagrada dodijeljena je pod imenom British Film Academy Awards. Prvobitno su nagrade dodjeljivane u kategorijama za najbolji strani film s britanskom produkcijom pod nazivom Najbolji film svih vremena (). Od 1948. do 1968. dodjeljivale su se nagrade u 2 kategorije: "Najbolji film svih vremena" (za strani film), te "Najbolji britanski film". Od 1969. do 1982. dodjeljuje se samo nagrada za najbolji film, a od 1983. nagrada za najbolji film, te nagrada za najbolji film na jeziku koji nije engleski. Od 1993. dodjeljuje se nagrada za najbolji britanski film "Alexander Korda".
