DeCandido va assistir a la New Rochelle Academy i a la Halstead School, i després a la Cardinal Spellman High School al Bronx abans d'assistir a la Universitat de Fordham. Carrera Després de graduar-se, DeCandido va treballar com a editor en diverses editorials. Juntament amb John S. Drew, a la dècada del 1990 va coproduir un programa de televisió per cable a Manhattan sobre ciència-ficció anomenat "The Chronic Rift", que també va copresentar.
