Cinq des comtés de l'État coïncident avec les cinq arrondissements (boroughs) de la ville de New York : comté de Bronx (The Bronx) ; comté de Kings (Brooklyn) ; comté de New York (Manhattan) ; comté de Queens (Queens) ; comté de Richmond (Staten Island). Cependant, ces derniers ne fonctionnent pas comme des comtés à proprement parler. En effet, ils ne possèdent pas de gouvernement de comté et dépendent entièrement de l'autorité municipale.
