La des Grammy Awards s'est déroulée le au Staples Center à Los Angeles, aux Etats-Unis. Le rappeur LL Cool J a animé la cérémonie pour la quatrième fois consécutive.
La période d'éligibilité était du au Grammy Press Release, 19 August 2014. Rompant avec la tradition d'un concert diffusé en prime time, les nominés aux Grammy Awards ont été annoncés lors d'un événement qui s'est déroulé toute la journée du , commençant par des annonces initiales lors de l'émission CBS This Morning, suivies de mises à jour publiées sur le compte Twitter officiel des Grammy Awards.
Sam Smith a remporté quatre prix, dont celui du Meilleur nouvel artiste, du Disque de l'année, de la Chanson de l'année pour « Stay with Me » et du Meilleur album pop vocal pour In the Lonely Hour. L'album de Beck, Morning Phase, a été nommé Album de l'année. Cela a incité Kanye West, qui a déclaré par la suite qu’il pensait que Beyoncé aurait dû gagner, à bondir sur scène en plaisantant pour interrompre Beck, reproduisant ainsi son scandale des MTV VMA de 2009, mais West a quitté la scène sans rien dire. Pharrell Williams et Beyoncé ont tous deux remporté trois prix ; grâce à ses victoires, Beyoncé est devenue la deuxième musicienne la plus récompensée de l’histoire des Grammy Awards, après Alison Krauss. Des prix pour l'ensemble de leur carrière ont été décernés aux Bee Gees, à George Harrison, à Pierre Boulez, à Buddy Guy et à Flaco Jiménez.
Au total, 83 Grammy Awards ont été remis, soit un de plus qu'en 2014.
L'émission a été diffusée simultanément sur Fox8 en Australie, sur Sky TV en Nouvelle-Zélande et sur Channel O en Afrique du Sud.
