Février : le mathématicien allemand Friedrich Wilhelm Levi présente le graphe de Levi dans une série de conférences sur la géométrie finie à l'Université de Calcutta. : les mathématiciens britanniques Alan Turing et William Gordon Welchman achèvent à Bletchley Park la conception de la « bombe cryptologique » destinée à décrypter les signaux de la machine Enigma.
