Depois de se formar no Departamento de Planejamento de Conceitos Visuais da Universidade de Artes de Osaka, ele decidiu entrar na indústria de videogames e se juntou à Nintendo em abril de 1986.
No início, Tanabe fazia parte da divisão de Entertainment Analysis and Development. Ele dirigiu os jogos de plataforma Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic e Super Mario Bros 2, e trabalhou nos roteiros das aventuras de ação The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past e The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
