Praeanthropus môže byť: pôvodne (podľa Musaffer Şenyürek 1955): rodové označenie (len) druhu Praeanthropus africanus, ktorý sa rovná druhu Meganthropus africanus podľa Ferguson 1986 a ďalších: rodové označenie (len) druhu Praeanthropus africanus, ktorý sa rovná druhu Australopithecus afarensis, ak tento druh zahŕňa nález Meganthropus africanus, pričom rozhodnutím ICZN z roku 1999 bol názov Praeanthropus africanus zmenený na Praeanthropus afarensis podľa Cela-Conde a Ayala 2003: rod zahŕňajúci druh Praeanthropus tugenensis (=Orrorin tugenensis) a tieto druhy australopitekov: Praeanthropus anamensis (=Australopithecus anamensis) Praeanthropus afarensis (=Australopithecus afarensis) Praeanthropus bahrelghazali (=Australopithecus bahrelghazali) Praeanthropus garhi (=Australopithecus garhi)
