Deveta Šahovska olimpijada 1950., koju je organizirala FIDE i koja se sastojala od otvorenog turnira, održana je od 20. augusta do 11. septembra u Dubrovniku.Šahovska olimpijada 1950. na OlimpBaseu

Turnir Turnir se igrao u Umjetničkoj dvorani u Dubrovniku. Na olimpijadi je nastupilo 16 ekipa sa ukupno 84 šahista, koji su igrali po Bergerovom sistemu. Ukupno su nastupili četvorica velemajstora: Miguel Najdorf, Samuel Reshevsky, Max Euwe i Savielly Tartakower, te 23-ica međunarodnih majstora. Ukupno je odigrano 480 partija (četiri po meču), a timovi su igrali na četiri table, a dva su rezervna igrača bila dozvoljena. Igralo se na dva i po sata sata za prvih 40 poteza, a nakon toga sat vremena za svakih 16 poteza. Glavni sudija bio je Austrijanac Hans Kmoch U slučaju istog broja osvojenih bodova, odlučivalo je timsko bodovanje, po kojem je za pobjedu tima dodjeljivano 2 boda, za remi 1 bod i poraz nije donosio bodove, zatim broj pobjeda i međusobni odnos.

Organizacija Zbog Drugog svjetskog rata, nakon 8. šahovske olimpijade održane 1939. godine, te hladnoratovskih političkih zaoštravanja, slijedeća olimpijada je održana tek 11 godina kasnije. Jugoslavenski šahovski savez se na kongresu FIDE 1948. u švedskom Saltsjöbadenu prijavio za organizaciju. Zbog političkog sukoba sa Sovjetskim savezom i Rezolucije Informbiroa, Sovjetski savez je zaprijetio bojkotom, ukoliko se olimpijada održi u Jugoslaviji, što je i ostvareno, a na ollimpijadi nisu nastupile ni ostale članice Varšavskog pakta. Reprezentacija Engleske nije nastupila zbog poklapanja termina sa nacionalnim prvenstvom Engleske.

Rezultati Pobjednik je po prvi put bila ekipa Jugoslavije u sastavu: Svetozar Gligorić sa devet pobjeda, dva poraza i četiri remija, Vasja Pirc (+2 −2 =5), Petar Trifunović (+8 −1 =4), Braslav Rabar (+8 −0 =2), Milan Vidmar jun. (+4 −0 =2) i Stojan Puc (+1 −1 =0). Drugo mjesto osvojili su šahisti Argentine: Miguel Najdorf (+8 −0 =6), Julio Bolbochán (+9 −0 =5), Carlos Guimard (+4 −2 =4), Hector Rossetto (+4 −1 =7) i Herman Pilnik (+6 −1 =3), a treće Zapadne Njemačke: Wolfgang Unzicker (+9 −1 =4), Lothar Schmid (+7 −1 =4), Gerhard Pfeiffer (+4 −1 =6), Ludwig Rellstab (+3 −2 =6) i Hans-Hilmar Staudte (+6 −3 =3). Najbolji igrači bili su Braslav Rabar i Larry Melvyn Evans sa učinkom 90,0% i osvojenih 9 poena iz 10 partija.
