Cet article présente la discographie du groupe de hard rock, Rainbow. Elle se compose de huit albums studios, seize albums live, quatorze compilations . Trois Ep's et vingt-quatre singles la complètent.
Présentation En 1974 - 1975, Deep Purple tourne pour promouvoir l'album, Stormbringer. Elf est régulièrement le groupe de première partie et Ritchie Blackmore est très impressionné par son chanteur Ronnie James Dio. Blackmore avait suggéré de reprendre la chanson de Steve Hammond ,Black Sheep of the Family, pendant les sessions de l'album Stormbringer mais les autres musiciens refusèrent. Fort de ses convictions, Blackmore décida de profiter de la présence des musiciens de Elf sur la tournée pour enregistrer et sortir la chanson en single. Finalement la session d'enregistrement se déroula tellement bien que l'enregistrement d'un album complet fut décidé, Blackmore et Dio collaborant à l'écriture des nouvelles chansons. L'album Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow sera enregistré en février et mars 1975 à Munich mais ne sortira qu'en août 1975. Entre temps, Ritchie Blackmore acheva la tournée européenne avec Deep Purple avant d'annoncer son départ après un dernier concert à Paris en avril 1975.
Ce premier album est bien reçu par le public, il se classe à la au Royaume-Uni et à la du Billboard 200 américain. Le groupe s'appelle maintenant uniquement Rainbow et avant la première tournée, Blackmore a déjà viré tous les musiciens, à l'exception de Ronnie James Dio. Se sera une caractéristique du groupe, aucun album studio ne sera enregistré avec les mêmes musiciens que le précédent, à l'exception de Ritchie Blackmore. Dio participera aux deux albums suivant, Rising (1976, UK #11, US #48) et Long Live Rock 'n' Roll (1978, UK #7, US #89) avant de quitter le groupe pour rejoindre Black Sabbath et remplacer Ozzy Osbourne.
Graham Bonnet remplace RJ Dio, Roger Glover intègre le lineup du groupe qui sort en 1979, Down to Earth (UK #6, US #66). Cet album est marqué par un changement dans la musique qui se dirige vers un rock plus FM, plus commercial, taillé pour les passage en radio. Les deux singles tirés de l'album, All Night Long (UK #5) et Since You Been Gone (UK #6, US # 57) sont les premiers hit-singles du groupe. 1981, nouvel album, Difficult to Cure (UK #3, US # 50) et nouveau chanteur, Joe Lynn Turner, suivi de Straight Between the Eyes (UK #5, US # 30) en 1982 et Bent Out of Shape (UK #11, US # 34). En 1984, Ritchie Blackmore participe au retour de Deep Purple et met fin provisoirement à Rainbow.
EN 1995, après avoir quitté définitivement Deep Purple, Blackmore ressuscite Rainbow avec des tout nouveaux musiciens. En septembre 1995, sort (sous le nom Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow), Stranger in Us All qui sera le dernier album studio du groupe.
